Expanding Codex Beyond Development

Codex has evolved from a developer-centric tool into a broader platform for knowledge work. With over 5 million weekly users, non-developers—including analysts, marketers, and investors—now represent 20% of the user base and are growing at 3x the rate of developers. To support this shift, OpenAI is introducing features that integrate Codex directly into existing business workflows.

Role-Specific Plugins and Ecosystem

OpenAI has launched six role-specific plugins that bundle apps, instructions, and workflows to eliminate the need for manual coding. These plugins currently support 62 apps and 110 distinct skills:

  • Data Analytics: Integrates with Snowflake, Databricks, Hex, and Tableau to automate reporting and metric analysis.
  • Creative Production: Connects with Figma, Canva, and Shutterstock to turn briefs into campaign boards and ad variations.
  • Sales: Aggregates customer context from Salesforce, HubSpot, and Outreach to assist with deal management and meeting preparation.
  • Product Design: Facilitates prototyping and user flow auditing by allowing teams to interact with static screenshots and live URLs.
  • Public Equity & Investment Banking: Streamlines research and diligence by analyzing earnings, comparable transactions, and market signals from platforms like Moody’s, FactSet, and PitchBook.

These plugins function out-of-the-box but are designed to be extensible, allowing teams to build and deploy custom plugins for proprietary systems. OpenAI plans to expand this into an open ecosystem where partners can deploy plugins directly within the Codex and ChatGPT environment.

Refining Workflows with Annotations and Sites

To improve the feedback loop, OpenAI is introducing in-place annotations, which allow users to refine AI-generated outputs directly within the interface. Additionally, the platform is previewing a feature that enables users to create and share interactive websites and applications via a simple URL. This allows teams to move from ideation to functional, shareable assets without leaving the Codex workspace.
